Conversations I Keep Having

If you could go back in time and give your younger self advice,
what would it be?

If I could go back in time and give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be to spend less time thinking about the past, unless it helps you move forward.

I’ve spent far too much time over the years rehearsing conversations that have already ended. Thinking about things I should have said but didn’t. Imagining how I might have handled a difficult situation differently. Or remembering how someone hurt me and becoming angry all over again. The trouble is that this kind of thinking rarely achieves anything. It can leave me feeling angry, embarrassed, or ashamed, without making me any wiser.

I’ve come to recognise the difference between reflection and rumination. Reflection helps us understand what happened, learn from it, and perhaps do things differently next time. Rumination takes us around the same territory again and again without getting anywhere.

I’m not suggesting we should forget the past. There are mistakes to acknowledge, apologies to make, relationships to repair, and injustices to address. Looking backwards can be enormously valuable when it helps us move forwards. But sometimes there is nothing more to be done. I’d rather be able to say to myself, “That was wrong. You could have handled that better. Learn from it, and move on.”

The same applies when other people have hurt us. We don’t have to pretend that what happened was acceptable. But endlessly revisiting the experience can allow it to occupy more of our lives than it deserves.

Perhaps part of growing older is recognising that not every problem can be solved by thinking about it some more. Some things have to be accepted, forgiven, or simply left behind.

The past has important things to teach us. But there’s a difference between learning from it and living in it. You don’t have to keep thinking about something simply because you haven’t managed to forget it.

If you could go back in time and give your younger self advice, what would it be?
