What’s a piece of technology you’re convinced will exist in 20 years?
In the near future, I hope to have no need to own a car. Clean, efficient and healthy transport matters much more to me than car ownership. I would prefer to walk, cycle, use public transport or rely on carshare when necessary.
Autonomous public transport pods could help make that possible. Imagine small driverless vehicles that arrive on demand, collect several passengers travelling in the same direction, and connect seamlessly with trains and buses. They would not replace walking, cycling or mass transit, but fill the gaps between them.
Used well, this technology could make car ownership unnecessary for many people. It could help create cities with fewer privately owned vehicles, less dependence on fossil fuels and transport systems designed around human and environmental health. The best transport technology of the future may not help us own better cars. It may help us live well without owning one at all.
