Micah is the Batman
of the prophets.
He walks into a city
that looks respectable from a distance
but is rotten underneath.
The powerful protect themselves.
Leaders have lost their way.
The poor are trampled.
Justice is for sale.
Gotham with temples.
And Micah comes
not from the palace
but from the country.
A nobody from nowhere
sent by God
to stand beneath the city lights
and say,
God sees you.
He sees what happens
when the doors are closed.
The deals.
The lies.
The bullying.
The way privilege protects privilege.
God sees.
But Micah is not simply
a masked figure pointing at villains.
Because eventually
the accusation turns towards us.
The courtroom fills.
Mountains become witnesses.
And God speaks
not like an angry judge
but a heartbroken father.
What have I done to you?
I rescued you.
I led you.
I stayed with you.
I blessed you
and blessed you
and blessed you.
What more could I have done?
And we start bargaining.
A thousand rams?
Ten thousand rivers of oil?
Look at what I have achieved, God.
Look at what I have given.
Is that enough?
But God does not want spectacle.
He wants a different kind of living.
Act justly.
Notice the people
the city has stopped noticing.
The poor.
The refugee.
The child without a home.
The person with no influence.
Stand where the scales have been tilted
and help make them level again.
Love mercy.
Do not become so obsessed
with punishing wrong
that you forget the person.
God takes our sins
and hurls them
into the depths of the sea.
Gone.
So stop diving after
the failures of others
just to drag them back to shore.
Let them sink.
Love them
and love them
and love them.
Walk humbly.
Because justice without humility
can become another kind of violence,
and mercy without God
eventually runs dry.
So walk.
Not stride ahead
certain that everyone should follow.
Walk beside God.
Close enough to whisper,
help me see this person.
Help me be your hands here.
Jesus knew this road.
He saw people.
Really saw them.
He challenged corruption
and ate with sinners.
He confronted arrogance
and knelt to wash feet.
And when violence
did its worst,
he said,
Father, forgive them.
A beautiful life.
Not complicated.
Just breathtaking.
Act justly.
Love mercy.
Walk humbly
with your God.
Three small instructions.
Three enormous ways
of being in the world.
See people.
Refuse to trample them.
Forgive more quickly
than feels reasonable.
Stay close to God.
