If you had to get a tattoo right now, what would it be and why?
I have never been drawn to tattoos. I have always thought the human body is attractive in itself, without needing further adornment.
But if I had to get one, I think I would choose three tiny words from Micah 6:8:
Justice. Mercy. Humility.
That passage was the focus of yesterday’s sermon, Justice, Mercy, Humility and they seem to me a better kind of adornment anyway. Not something written on the skin, but something lived out.
If I had to choose an image, I would go with Lady Justice. She carries scales to weigh evidence fairly, and a sword to represent the authority to enforce what is right. The sword sits beneath the scales: reason, truth and evidence should come before punishment.
Then there is the blindfold. It represents impartiality. Justice should not be influenced by what someone looks like, what they wear, how wealthy they are, or how much power they possess. Justice still notices the people others overlook. It speaks up for those without power. It stands beside minorities, refugees and the vulnerable.
So perhaps that would be my tattoo: three small words, or Lady Justice.
Not really decoration. More a reminder of the kind of values we should embody.
