Decide What Enough Means

If you had to give one life changing tip what would it be?

If I had to offer one life-changing tip, it would be this: decide what “enough” means.

Unless we define it for ourselves, the world will keep defining it as more. More money. More possessions. More recognition. More achievement.

Donald Trump once said that money was not a great motivation for him except as a way of keeping score. The real excitement was playing the game.

That is the problem with scoreboards. They never tell us when to stop. However much we have, someone else may have more. Satisfaction is always postponed.

But more carries a cost. More work may mean less rest. More possessions may mean less space. More ambition may mean less attention for the people and practices that matter most.

A good life depends greatly on where we place our attention. Once we no longer need to pursue everything, we can give ourselves more fully to relationships, hospitality, creativity, faith and the ordinary pleasures we easily overlook.

Generosity also begins with believing that we have enough. When we feel perpetually deprived, we protect and accumulate. When we recognise sufficiency, it becomes easier to share our money, time, opportunities and encouragement.

Perhaps a meaningful life is measured less by the score we accumulate than by what our choices make room for.

Enough is the point at which we stop playing a game that can never be won and begin paying attention to the life we already have.
