What’s your home decoration style?
Warm minimalism is probably the best description of our home decoration style. I increasingly prefer fewer things, but I do not want to live in a house that feels like a showroom. I like light, space, timber, artwork, books and enough warmth to suggest that people actually live there.
Artwork is the first thing we put in place. We have a couple of pieces that are important to us, and we tend to build the room around them. They are not simply decorations, they determine the character of the space.
The same principle applies to books. I keep one bookshelf of classics that I want to retain in physical form. Most of the rest are electronic.
We prefer simple, well-built furniture. A comfortable lounge matters more than something that looks impressive but is unpleasant to sit on. White walls and good light create calm, while timber and meaningful mementos carefully keep the room warm and friendly.
For us, a home should be beautiful, but it should also be usable. There should be somewhere comfortable to sit with a cup of tea. People should feel able to settle in, stay as long as they want and speak freely.
Perhaps that is the real meaning of warm minimalism. Keep what matters. Choose things that are beautiful, useful or meaningful. Then leave enough space for people.
