Five Kinds of Fun

List five things you do for fun.

Body fun: I’m an active person. Sport is fun for me, especially football — not just the contest, but the camaraderie of being part of a cohesive team. The best moments are when everything just clicks and you start playing attractive football without forcing it.

Mind fun: I genuinely enjoy learning. I love the ah-ha moment when an idea lands and rearranges the furniture in my head — like a podcast with Alan Dienstag on the spiritual aspects of memory. He suggested that the early stages of Alzheimer’s can be a time for giving memories away rather than simply losing them, and that resonated with my passion for helping people write down their life stories.

Creative fun: I love writing. One of my favourite things is to listen for the spiritual and emotional essence of each Sunday’s sermon and turn it into a poem, then offer it back to the preacher as a gift. It’s fun turning spoken word into written word, exposition into art — and it’s even more fun when it encourages someone.

People fun: I love cooking for people and hosting. There’s something deeply satisfying eating with friends, the clatter of plates, and the knowledge that dinner worked. Some French visitors loved my garlic–sesame crusted chicken with mango salad — they even asked for the recipe, which is about as high a compliment as cooking gets.

Wonder fun: I love bushwalking — the exertion, yes, but also the immersion in beauty. I still remember walking in the Victorian Alps and coming across a lyrebird fossicking right there on the track. Moments like that are a quiet gift — nature being itself, and me lucky enough to be part of it.
