The Skill That Looks Effortless

What’s the most underrated life skill?

I really admire people who are strong in empathy.

They are often the people I am drawn to most. They seem able to sense what others are feeling and understand what someone may be experiencing before that person has even found the words.

They hear the unvoiced questions. They notice hesitation, silence, tone and what has been left unsaid. They often find the words that help another person make sense of their own emotional life. That is a rare gift.

I think empathy is underrated partly because the people who are best at it make it look effortless. We notice the person who solves the problem, makes the decision or achieves the result. We are less likely to notice the person who quietly helps someone feel understood. Yet that ability can prevent conflict, deepen relationships and help people speak honestly.

It is especially valuable across cultures, where much may be communicated through context, tone and what is not said.

Empathy is sometimes called a soft skill. I think that undersells it. It is one of the most powerful human abilities we have: helping another person feel seen, heard and understood.
