The genie grants you a wish. What is it?
If a genie appeared and offered me one wish, I don’t think I’d need much time to decide. I’d give the wish away.
I already have enough. I’ve lived a fortunate life. Of course there are things I could wish were different, but I don’t feel any great need for more.
Instead, I think of a friend of mine. He had to flee the country he loves. Nobody does that lightly. People leave because staying has become impossible. In his case, I doubt he would still be alive if he had remained.
Life since then has not been easy. His homeland suffered terribly during COVID, and many people close to him died. He has also faced significant health problems, with things at times seeming to go from bad to worse.
And yet he has held on to a dream. That is what moves me most. In spite of everything, he has not let go of the hope that his life might still become something good and that what he hopes to do might bless other people.
So I already know what my wish would be, because it is really the prayer I pray for him every day. That his health will be restored. That he will be able to pursue his dream. And that, through him, that dream will bless the lives of many others.
Perhaps that is one of the gifts of knowing you have enough. You stop thinking quite so much about what else you might receive and start thinking about what you would gladly give away.
If the genie offered me one wish, I wouldn’t ask for anything more for myself. I’d give the wish to my friend.
