It’s Just Who I Am

What is the best excuse you have heard lately?

“It’s just who I am” may be one of our best excuses because it disguises itself as self-knowledge.

We think of ourselves as impatient, avoidant, untidy or blunt, then treat these patterns as permanent personality traits rather than habits that could change. A blunt person can learn gentleness. An impatient person can practise restraint. An avoidant person can face what is uncomfortable.

The problem is that “That’s just who I am” often shifts the burden onto others. They must tolerate the irritation, absorb the hurt or deal with what we refuse to face. Change does not mean becoming someone else. It means becoming a wiser version of ourselves. Genuine self-knowledge says, “This is how I function, this is how it affects others, and this is where I need to grow.”
