What’s your favourite meme?
We’re dog lovers in our household. More specifically, we love female border collies. They are intelligent, active, great company, and intense. Very intense.
A lot of staring takes place in our house. There is staring when it is time to go for a walk in the park. Staring when it is time to drop into the office at lunchtime. Staring when the work day is drawing to a close and it is time to drop into the office again. Staring when it is dinner time, or close enough to dinner time to make the distinction meaningless.
And then there is the after-dinner snack. Our dog has a particular interest in crumpets, toast, and peanut butter. She does not beg exactly. That would be beneath her. She simply fixes her eyes on you until you remember what sort of person you are supposed to be.
So my favourite meme is the border collie staring straight ahead with the words: If I keep staring, you will give me your food. It makes me laugh because it is not really a joke. It is what happens.
She is not controlling. She just loves routine and knows what is supposed to happen when. If we are late, we get a gentle reminder. Usually with two unblinking eyes and a deep confidence that the universe will eventually return to its proper order. And, most of the time, it does.
