Three Objects, Three Values

What are three objects you couldn’t live without?

The three objects I couldn’t live without are not glamorous, but they do tell the truth about me.

The first is my laptop. It is my library, office, writing desk, research assistant, and communication centre all in one. So much of my life runs through it. It is where I read, write, think, prepare, and keep in touch, and I love the freedom of being able to do all of that wherever I am.

The second is my walking shoes. I like to move, and I try to exercise every day, so a good pair of shoes is essential. I love long, energetic walks, and they do as much for my mind as they do for my body.

The third is my kitchen knife. I care a lot about eating well, and a sharp knife sits at the centre of that. I do not eat processed food, I do not eat takeaway, and I have not eaten fast food for more than twenty-five years — apart from one reluctant meal long ago with a friend and her seven-year-old son, who refused to eat anywhere else.

So yes, my three objects are a laptop, a pair of walking shoes, and a kitchen knife. Not flashy, perhaps, but between them they say a lot about the life I value: communication, exercise, and nourishment.
