How has technology changed your job?
Technology has made my work faster, broader, and more efficient, but not lighter.
There was a time when work had clearer edges. A meeting ended. A letter was sent. A file was closed. You might write to Perth and wait a week or two for a reply. There was space built into the process. Space to think, to breathe, to let one task finish before the next began.
Now everything is immediate. I can be on a Zoom call to Hyderabad while simultaneously sending emails to Shanghai. Messages arrive constantly. Turnaround times are quick, and in many ways that is a gift. Problems can be solved faster. Decisions can be made sooner. Communication across distance is remarkably easy.
But the speed comes at a cost. Work no longer stops in the same way. Because communication is instant, the expectation of response can feel constant. Emails and messages arrive across the day and night. The office is no longer only a place; it is a stream of notifications, always within reach.
That, more than anything, is how technology has changed my job. It has made work more immediate, but also more relentless. It has increased efficiency, while also creating mental clutter. The challenge now is not simply getting the work done. It is learning how to create boundaries in a world where the work is never quite finished.
