Where would you go on a shopping spree?
I’m not much of a shopper. I buy what I need, but I rarely find myself dreaming of more, which means I can be slow to replace things even when they are clearly wearing out. Shirts can get frayed before I finally do something about them, and I usually need a prompt before I act.
But I do love growing things. During COVID, I grew banksias from seed on my windowsill, then re-potted them and eventually planted them out or gave them away as gifts. Years later, many of those seedlings are now growing beautifully in our grounds.
So if I were to go on a shopping spree, it would not be for clothes, gadgets, or luxury items. It would be through a nursery, pushing a trolley full of possibility: native grasses, herbs, flowering shrubs, and small trees for the future.
I would not really be buying things at all. I would be buying growth, beauty, shade, fruit, habitat, and the quiet hope that comes from planting something now that will flourish long after the moment of purchase has passed.
