What’s your favourite candy?
I’ve always liked things that are sour.
In high school a friend of mine had a big lemon tree in his backyard. When it was in fruit, we’d climb up and perch in the branches and eat lemons straight off the tree. It sounds ridiculous, but I loved it. Ever since then I’ve been drawn to anything with lemon in it.
These days my favourite “candy” is Warheads Extreme Sour Hard Candy. It comes in five flavours—watermelon, blue raspberry, lemon, black cherry, and green apple—and, unsurprisingly, I go for the lemon.
The problem is they’re not always easy to find. A friend put me onto an alternative: Sour Watermelon Slices. They aren’t hard like Warheads. They’re tangy, chewy lollies with a sour twist—sweet and sharp at the same time. Best of all, they’re easy to pick up at the supermarkets across the road from us.
I could also easily eat too many, which is why I try to keep them as an occasional treat. I’m trying to minimise my sugar intake, so this is one of those small disciplines that matters more than it should.
Last year that same friend gave me a pack of the Watermelon Slices for my birthday. It was a simple gift, but it made me laugh—because it said, “I know you.”
