A Light Has Dawned – Isaiah 9:2-7

Long before Google,
before WhatsApp, Messenger,
before the soft tyranny of notifications—
no ping, no buzz, no banner across a screen—
a message came,
not broadcast, not algorithmic,
but carried quietly,
wrapped in a name.

Not everyone received it.
Some were in the dark.

Isaiah stood eight hundred years
before the first Christmas
and dared to say it:
A light has dawned.

Who were these people?
A land bruised by violence and oppression,
ruled by Caesar Augustus,
governed by Quirinius—
men with power
and no idea what God was doing.

Four hundred years of silence.
No prophet.
No word.
Only grief and waiting.

Joseph learns the woman he loves is pregnant.
Nothing makes sense.
No one knows what God is doing
until the light breaks in.

Then shepherds see it—
a strange light,
radiant and pure,
unscripted, unmanufactured.
They are shocked—
not by the glory alone,
but by the fact
that it is happening to them.

Not the kind who attend Bible studies
or conferences.
Regarded as unclean.
Unable to enter the Temple.
Outcasts.
Rejected.
And yet
the glory of the Lord comes to them.
Astounding.

A manger.
A feeding trough.
An absurd place for a child.
A light has dawned.

Isaiah dreamt of it.
The shepherds heard about it.
And now—
A light has dawned.

Wonderful Counsellor,
guiding frightened hearts.

Mighty God,
who will lay down his life
and take it up again.

Everlasting Father,
who brings us home
and tends our lives.

Prince of Peace,
even as the shadow of the cross
falls across the cradle.

No room.
God comes anyway.
People love the darkness,
but Jesus steps into it,
empties himself,
takes on flesh,
and is not ashamed to be held.

The only way out
is to walk in the light.

The shepherds did.
They went to Bethlehem.
They became the first
to welcome Jesus into the world.

And isn’t that what Christmas is about?

A light has dawned—
and the perfect gift
has been given,
one none of us
could ever afford,
but all of us
are invited
to receive.
