A Sermon on the Holy Trinity

We say:
three persons,
one God.
And already our minds flinch
like startled birds.
It is not easy—
but it is true.
The preacher might joke
about coming down with influenza
rather than preach this mystery.
But still—
here we are,
looking into the cockpit,
lights blinking,
dials glowing,
a thousand unseen systems
making flight possible
this doctrine is the cockpit.
This doctrine is the bass line
you don’t mention
when leaving a Coldplay concert,
but without it—
there’s no music.
You won’t find
“Trinity”
in the concordance,
but look again—
and you’ll see it
everywhere.
The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
And yet—
at Jesus’ baptism:
the Son emerges from water,
the Spirit descends like a dove,
and the Father speaks from heaven.
Not one God
playing dress-ups—
a mask here,
a new outfit there.
Not ice, water, and steam—
those melt into error.
No.
Three persons.
One God.
Always.
The Father chooses.
The Son saves.
The Spirit seals.
Together, they draw us home.
Creation began with,
“Let us make.”
Not loneliness,
but love—
overflowing.
Before time,
the Father loved the Son.
The Spirit danced in delight.
God was never lonely.
God was never in need.
And yet—
we were made.
Because love overflows.
You don’t have to understand it
any more than I understood chemistry.
This isn’t a test.
It’s an invitation.
An invitation to worship
what we cannot explain—
to live in a love
that is older than time
and deeper than words.
To stand,
with trembling awe,
before the fountain
that never runs dry.
There is no god like our God.
There is no one
who even comes close.
