The Third Way

Interviewer: Are you seeking security or adventure?

Me:
Neither.
I made that choice decades ago. No regrets.

Interviewer: That’s unusual. Most people aim for one or the other—either a solid foundation or something that makes the heart race.
Me:
I get that.
But both are inward-looking.
Security asks, “Am I safe?”
Adventure asks, “Am I thrilled?”
I asked, “What matters most?”

Interviewer: And what was your answer?
Me:
Love of God. Love of neighbour.
That’s what lasts.
Not safety. Not excitement.
But the slow, deep work of investing in others
because God has never stopped investing in us.

Interviewer: That sounds… purposeful.
Me:
It is.
Purpose rooted in grace.
Meaning that doesn’t need to sparkle or shield—
just to serve.

Interviewer: Did you ever wish you’d chased something else?
Me:
Not once.
Because the more I gave myself away,
the more life opened up.
Not easy. Not glamorous.
But rich in meaning.

Interviewer: So if not security or adventure, what word would you choose?
Me:
Faithfulness.
To God. To people.
To the small, good things that echo in eternity.

There must be more
than securing what’s mine
or chasing what dazzles.

There must be
a deeper call
than safety
or spectacle.

Not the padded life,
not the wild ride—
but the life given,
bit by bit,
in quiet acts of faithfulness.

There must be something more
than always protecting
or always escaping.
There must be a way
to live wide awake.

If there is,
then I choose that.
Let my life
be a wager
on the possibility
that there is.
